翻訳の難しさ。。。Difficulties in Translation

Most Japanese Returnee students will have few experiences in translation. Whether it would be for part time job or for assisting exchange student at University, returnee students will be translating from either Japanese to English or English to Japanese. It is possible to translate word by word. However, I find some difficulty in translating nuances behind those words and likewise currently struggle with that dilemma. Certain situations such as translating manga was one of the most difficult translation.

When reading manga, readers would often see the しーん or the silent white-noise in the background. I personally had the trouble of translating that one scene into English. In addition, I had to also translate Japanese jokes or even slang into an English word that English speaking audience would understand. In the midst of Japan’s globalization, demand for English translators will be rising. Regardless, people should take account of the complexity in translating the meaning behind those words which many translators experience day by day. As bilingual students, we would be happy to take translation jobs but just understand that we do experience difficulties hahaha.

Sincerely, the Sales Intern
